Summer time is party time!
By Julie Lapointe, stylist
School is over (yippee!) and it’s the perfect time to enjoy the next few weeks of freedom to the fullest! Even if you’re not technically off this summer, you can still enjoy the nice weather. After all, during these blissful summer months, the atmosphere is a lot more casual.
Forget about neatly organised, strict schedules until September: summer is for celebrating, welcoming kids and grownups into your home and making nights last until the morning!
Start by celebrating your children’s academic success. Congratulate them on all of the efforts they made during the school year and kick off the fun-filled summer that awaits them. Invite their friends to a fun party with a buffet and lemonades in to-go cups. (1) Set up a colourful patio to host them in style! Use outdoor cushions with funky prints (2), brightly-coloured rugs and (why not?) colourful and edible plants, like bright yellow violets.
During the summer, the sunshine and warm weather alone can make you want to let loose, so why not throw fun, eclectic pool parties? (4) This year again, inflatable pool toys are a must. Float on a unicorn, a donut or a palm tree. Impress your friends with a mini inflatable raft that will let them bring their refreshments in the pool (3). All you’ll need to do is to make them some fun summertime drinks!
Here are a few of my family-friendly favourites:
Virgin raspberry mojito
- In a large glass, crush four fresh raspberries, five mint leaves and a teaspoon of maple syrup.
- Add a bit of ice.
- Add ¼ cup of cranberry juice and the juice of half of a lime.
- Top up your glass with ginger soda
- Garnish with a lime slice and a few raspberries. Yummy!
The fun won’t stop when the sun comes down. Whether you end up around the fire or comfortably seated on the patio, create a magical feeling with string lights or lanterns. We recommend going with small, battery-powered lanterns. Safe and easy to use, they can be set up all around the patio, in the garden and on your table to light up your lingering summer outdoor dinners. They come in a wide variety of sizes and fit in any decor, from a chic and sophisticated setup to a funky, eclectic environment. (5) Add a finishing touch to your decor with some string lights. They’ll turn your backyard in an Instagram-worthy illuminated garden! Some string lights are also battery operated. Spread them around the garden or be bold and set them up in your outdoor plants to create fairy-tale looking trees! (6)
With such a beautiful setup, all that’s left for you to do is let your spontaneity guide you! Make the most of this beautiful season (doesn’t it always go by way too fast?) and reconnect with your inner child – just like when you were on break all summer long!
